Results of Range-Finding Testing of Leak Detection and Leak Location Technologies for Underground PipelinesAmerican Petroleum Institute / 01-Jan-1998 / 252 pages

This study reviewed the current leak detection and leak location methods for pressurized underground piping commonly found at airports, refineries, and fuel terminals. Four methods for testing underground pipes of 6 to 18 inches in diameter and 250 feet to 2 miles in length were selected for field demonstration. These technologies were constant-pressure volumetric testing, pressure-decay testing, chemical tracer testing, and acoustic emission testing. No single leak detection system was found to work in all situations; site-specific conditions may affect any method, and combinations of methods may provide the most effective approach.
